Teens: Your parents are tracking your every move
A couple of months ago I let you know about SkyGuard, a nationwide vehicle tracking service offered by MCI’s SkyTel division, which lets parents of teenagers track where they go when they’re driving. Now a new company has entered the market, offering vehicle tracking and notification services to parents.
The Mobile Chaperone, offered by Qualicom Systems of Fort Myers, Fla., not to be confused with Qualcomm, retails for $329, and for about $13 a month allows parents to access real-time information on where the tracked vehicle is and where it has been recently. Parents can also receive notifications via text message to their wireless phones.
The system uses GPS to track the vehicle’s location, and uploads data via the Cingular Wireless network.
“For the most part, the parents are keeping it secretive for the first couple of weeks and then they’re coming out in the open once they see what the child’s actual driving habits are,” Chris Pfaff of Qualicom told WBBH-TV.
The system does not yet offer services such as alerts in the event of an accident, or remote lockout, though the company plans to offer these in the future.
A Web site for the company could not be located at press time.
