BellSouth introduces 6Mbps DSL

BellSouth on Wednesday announced that it would begin offering high-speed DSL with 6 megabit per second download speeds at $46.95 per month.

“BellSouth recognizes that many of our customers want faster speeds to get the most out of their Internet experience,” said Pam Jones, vice president of data product management at BellSouth. “We are committed to providing the greatest choice and value to our customers — and with this new service, BellSouth now offers the widest range of broadband options in our market.”

The service, named FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0, has downstream connection speeds of up to 6Mbps and upstream connection speeds up to 512Kbps. It had been expected earlier in the year, but BellSouth delayed its introduction due to Hurricane Katrina, as the company diverted technicians from implementation to respond to the hurricane.

BellSouth offers three other tiers of DSL service: FastAccess DSL Xtreme, with speeds of 3Mbps/384Kbps at $42.95 per month, FastAccess DSL Ultra, with speeds of 1.5Mbps/256Kbps at $32.95 per month, and FastAccess DSL Lite, with speeds of 256Kbps/128Kbps, at $24.95 per month.

BellSouth said that it had more than 2.6 million DSL subscribers at the end of the third quarter 2005.

Not all subscribers will qualify for FastAccess DSL Xtreme 6.0. DSL is a distance-limited technology, so only those subscribers who reside fairly close to a central office or remote DSLAM where the 6Mbps technology has been deployed will be able to receive the higher speeds. DSL speeds can also be affected by line quality.

      1. [...] I don’t think that the city “stabbed BellSouth in the back.” The company is busy rolling out very high speed broadband connections, taking focus off of lower speed connections. And its network in New Orleans still isn’t entirely up to where it was before the hurricane. [...]
