Justice Department clears Verizon-MCI, SBC-AT&T mergers

The U.S. Department of Justice on Thursday approved the mergers of Verizon with MCI and SBC with AT&T without significant conditions such as the divestiture of assets that critics had asked for.

The only significant condition attached to the mergers by Justice is the requirement for the companies to offer dark fiber to their competitors in 19 metropolitan areas where they are the only providers of that service.

The mergers still require Federal Communications Commission approval, which could come at Friday’s FCC meeting, and approvals from several states.
