Cingular offers mobile email, instant messaging

Cingular Wireless announced Monday the availability of mobile email and instant messaging for its wireless subscribers nationwide.

Cingular’s new Mobile Email service allows users to check their AOL mail, MSN Hotmail, or Yahoo! Mail from their phone. The service currently works only with the Motorola v180, v220, v400, v551 and v3 Razr handsets and requires a software download.

In addition, the new Mobile IM service lets subscribers send and receive instant messages via AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger or Yahoo! Messenger. This service works with Nokia (6230, 6620), Motorola (V180, V220, V400, V551, RAZR V3) and Sony Ericsson (Z500 and S710a) handsets and also requires a software download.

A subscription to Cingular MEdia is required, and data charges apply to the downloads as well as messages sent or received. MEdia Basic is $9.99 per month and includes 200 instant messages and 1MB of data transfer, with overage of $0.10 per instant message, and MEdia Works is $19.99 per month and includes 1,000 instant messages and 5MB of data transfer, with overage of $0.05 per message. Both plans charge $0.01 per KB (kilobyte) of data transfer overage.
