Palm replacing faulty SIM trays on Cingular Treo 650 smartphones

Palm, Inc., will replace the SIM tray on some Treo 650 smartphones being offered by Cingular Wireless. The defective SIM tray can cause the device to reset or the radio to turn off when the phone is bumped or jarred.

To find out if your SIM tray needs to be replaced, turn off the radio, pull out the SIM tray, remove your SIM card and compare it to this picture.

If your SIM tray looks like the “OLD” tray shown there, contact Cingular Wireless, and they will have a replacement SIM tray shipped to you from Palm. You can also contact Palm’s SIM tray hotline directly at +1 866 677-7256. Palm will ship the replacement SIM tray within 1 to 2 business days.

If you need a quick fix before your new SIM tray arrives, you can use an effective low-cost alternative. I took a small scrap of paper, about the size of the SIM, folded it in half and placed it between the SIM and the tray. It created enough increased pressure to keep the SIM in contact with the handset and the problem was solved.
